EPD on Demand partners with MixHub to make concrete sustainability data accessible to everyday customers

EPD on Demand has announced a partnership with MixHub, the Sydney-based platform that allows tradies, concreters and builders to book ready-mix concrete online with all-included pricing, confirmed delivery slots and streamlined supplier coordination.

Founded by Jason Chandler and Niki Jackson, EPD on Demand produces Life Cycle Assessments and Environmental Product Declarations for the construction industry. An EPD is an independently verified document setting out the environmental impact of a specific product, in this case a specific concrete mix from a specific plant. Until now, that information has largely been the preserve of major projects with the budget and the specialist support to ask for it.

The partnership has three objectives.

The first is to make sustainability information visible and accessible to concrete customers of every size, not only to projects with a sustainability consultant on the team.

The second is to support wider adoption of EPDs by concrete suppliers, by making the process of having declarations produced faster and simpler.

The third is to bring genuine technical expertise to MixHub's customers through a programme of expert content published on the platform and authored by Jason Chandler, who also advises MixHub on concrete technology.

Jason Chandler, co-founder of EPD on Demand, said the partnership was a chance to move environmental data out of the tender documents and into everyday ordering.

“The industry has spent years talking about transparency, but in practice the environmental data is not always surfaced by suppliers. Making it more easily available with every order is how that changes. MixHub reaches the part of the market that has never had access to this information, and it reaches suppliers who want to do the right thing but need the process to be quick and affordable. That is exactly what we built EPD on Demand for.”

Foucauld Dalle, co-founder of MixHub, said the partnership opens up a part of the market that has been out of reach for smaller customers.

“Environmental data on concrete has been the preserve of big projects and big budgets. Jason and Niki have built something that makes it quick and affordable to produce, which is the only way it ever becomes normal. Jason Chandler has over 22 years in the construction materials industry and is founder and director of Concrete Insights, a specialist concrete technology consultancy. He provides his time to several industry organisations, sitting on the National Council of the Concrete Institute of Australia, the board of the Institute of Quarrying Australia, the NSW subcommittee of the Concrete Institute of Australia, the ACI Subcommittee 323G Low Carbon Concrete Code – International and Education, and the Eco Platform Technical Working Group (TEWOG). He previously served on the executive of the Australian Society for Concrete Pavements and as the Cement Concrete and Aggregates Australia representative to Standards Australia for BD49, the committee overseeing AS 1379 Specification and Supply of Concrete.

Niki Jackson has over 23 years in the concrete and extractive industry, spanning materials testing, technical, operations, chemical admixtures and project management. He is director of Sustainable Future by Design, which works with producers to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete through cement replacement and mix optimisation. He holds a Master of Science and Engineering specialising in Advanced Concrete Technology and a certificate in cement chemistry and sustainable cementitious materials. Niki chaired the sub-committee in MECLA working group 5B cement and concrete to develop and release the guide to low carbon concrete in Australia and is a member of the Eco Platform Technical Working Group (TEWOG).
